Stan Cushman

–

Gainesville, Florida

Stan Cushman passed away peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of December 14, 2023, at his home in Gainesville, Florida. Stan was born on July 17, 1943, in Clark County, Indiana. He was predeceased by the parents he dearly loved, Lucius and Helen Cushman. Stan's father was a prominent Miami attorney from whom Stan learned to love the law. After graduating from Stetson Law School in 1969 he practiced for many years with his father before moving to Gainesville where he initially practiced with Huntly Johnson. For most of his distinguished career, Stan was a partner, eventually managing partner, with the law firm of Scruggs and Carmichael. He was the consummate trial lawyer and a great mentor to the younger lawyers in the firm. His meticulous and always dapper appearance when he was going to court enhanced his trial persona. Stan had a wonderful sense of humor, although often acerbic. For example, upon the arrest of one of his clients, he commented "with his chameleon-like ability to blend into his natural environment, he was busted in his Rolls Royce Silver Cloud at state line, Nevada." Always upbeat, Stan employed his remarkable intellect and extraordinary vocabulary to great impact in court, also using it to amuse his friends regularly. He relished reading, which enabled him to develop the vocabulary which was possibly unmatched in Gainesville. At night, Stan needed little sleep, giving him an extra head start on the consumption of books and developing legal strategies. Stan, although not ready for the senior circuit, was an avid golfer. He and his beloved June, at one time, vowed to play all of the major golf courses in the United States. They were largely successful in attaining this goal as well as golfing for many years all over the world. The great love of Stan's life was his wife of many years, June Leonard. To say he adored her would be an understatement. Stan and June were constant companions who loved to be with each other more than anything else in the world. They were together for over 45 years. Although they were a private couple, Stan and June loved spending time with his siblings, and their very best friends, including the St.Germain Family. One of Stan's proudest occasions was having Alycia by his side for his 80th birthday celebration weekend. Stan is survived by his wife June, his daughter Alycia, his son Adam and grandchildren. They and all of his siblings and many friends will dearly miss him.Arrangements are in the care of Milam Funeral Home at 311 S. Main Street, Gainesville, FL 32601.
