Matthew Defrates

–

Gainesville, Florida

It is with extremely heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Matthew Defrates,
age 44. He passed away on Saturday, February 8th, 2025. He was born on June 21st
1980 in Key West, Florida. From childhood to adulthood, Matt never stopped bringing light and laughter to everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was raised by his loving parents Sandra Bell and Mark Defrates in Key West, Florida. Matthew shared his childhood with four siblings: older brother Christopher Carmona, older sisters Kier Purdy and Ananda Lavan and younger brother Joshua Galvan.

Matthew was a handsome, vibrant spirit who charmed and uplifted people from his earliest childhood. He grew into the sweetest, funniest, and most adventurous individual, filling every room with joy and laughter. A true free spirit, Matt never shied away from engaging in activities that brought laughter and thrills, especially with younger members of the family.

His adventurous nature, coupled with a profound love for life, led him to travel
extensively. A true island boy, the ocean was his sanctuary. There he found peace and joy. As an adult, Matt channeled his entrepreneurial spirit into a successful car detailing business, which supported his travels and many fun stays in resorts with his beloved fiancée, Karina. Together, they explored new places, indulged in culinary delights, and cherished each other's company.

Fifteen years ago, Matthew took a significant step in his life by getting sober, becoming an inspiration and pillar of support within his community. His commitment to improving his own life and giving back was unwavering, and his influence spread far and wide.

Matthew's family was the cornerstone of his life. Described as the glue that held them together, he was fiercely loyal to his mother and cherished every moment spent with her. His devotion extended to his nieces—Gabrielle Carmona, Kayleigh Carmona, Ijah Hachey, Jade Lavan, Avalon Purdy, and Jazmine Galvan—whom he adored and constantly entertained with his childlike enthusiasm.

An animal lover at heart, Matthew rescued a stray cat and lovingly cared for her and her kittens, which became his cherished companions. This was just one
testament to his boundless compassion and caring nature.

Matthew leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and light. His memory will forever be etched in the hearts of his family, friends, and fiancée Karina. Though our hearts ache with his absence, we find solace in knowing he would want us to embrace life with the same positivity and warmth he embodied.

In honour of Matt, let us all strive to live with the passion, kindness, and joy that
he so effortlessly embodied. He will never be forgotten.

Rest in peace, Matt. You were loved more than words can ever express
