Juliet Cone Shrader

Juliet Cone Shrader, 97, a resident of Gainesville, Florida, passed away on September 26, 2025. A native of Tampa, Florida, Juliet (“Julie”) was the daughter of John Wofford Cone and Juliet Graves Cone. As a child, she was chosen by her 4th grade class to write a letter to the editor of the Tampa Tribune requesting reinstatement of a favorite comic strip, a successful effort that ignited a lifelong love for journalism. She would later become the editor of her high school newspaper and a staff writer for the Tribune.

After graduating in 1951 from studies in English and Journalism at the University of Alabama, she married but continued her career, working at several city newspapers. Eventually settling in Huntsville, Alabama in 1968 with her young daughter, Julie worked as a technical writer for several firms including most notably Intergraph Corp. She applied her skills extensively to volunteer work as well, particularly in the 1980s with Habitat for Humanity, providing much of the earliest publicity they received in Huntsville.

Julie married her husband, William (Bill) Shrader of Huntsville, a retired NASA engineer, in 1991, and they spent 27 happy years together. Upon his passing in 2018, she moved to Gainesville, Florida to be near her beloved daughter.

Julie loved traveling and her many friendships, and was an avid swimmer. Her favorite childhood memories were of her trips to her father’s hometown of White Springs, Florida on the Suwannee River, where she spent many happy hours swimming at the old spring house. She will be remembered as a kind and steadfast wife, mother, and friend.

Survivors include her daughter Rosalind Moore of Gainesville, FL; niece Anne Clem of Nashville, TN; and stepdaughter Cathie Hope (David) and family of Killen, AL.

A Graveside service will be held in White Springs at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Citizen Support Organization of the Stephen Foster Folk Culture Center State Park in White Springs, FL at stephenfostercso.org/donate, by selecting the option to donate in her memory.
