Alvaro Fernando Sulsona ("Al")
Alvaro Fernando Sulsona, affectionately known as "Al" or "Abu" by his grandchildren, passed away on October 31, 2026, at the age of 86.
Born in Puerto Rico, Al met and married the love of his life, Myrna Sulsona. Together they shared 46 years of marriage before her passing, raising six children and building a life grounded in faith, family, and service. In 1976, they made Gainesville, Florida, their home, where they created lasting friendships, cherished family traditions, and became a beloved part of the community.
Al enjoyed a successful career with Eastern Airlines and later in retail operations. After retirement, he continued serving others through his Catholic faith, volunteering with local churches to prepare and serve meals for those experiencing homelessness and ministering to residents of Palm Garden Assisted Living, where he spent his final years.
Family was at the center of everything Al did. He and Myrna spent years cheering on their children at sporting events, opening their home to friends and family, and creating cherished holiday traditions. Known for his generosity and welcoming spirit, Al expressed his love through cooking and took great joy in gathering people around the table. No one was ever turned away from the Sulsona home, especially during Thanksgiving and Christmas.
Al was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Myrna Sulsona.
He is survived by his children: Alvaro F. Sulsona Jr. (Tammy) and grandson Isaac; Xavior Sulsona and his children Moorea, Brandon, Dawson, and Reef; Carlos Sulsona; Liza Sulsona Korfhage and son Zane; Myrna Mulholland (Kris) and their children Katie, Kyra, and Landon; and Suzy Sulsona. He is also survived by his great-grandchildren Noah, James, and Titus.
A Mass and Celebration of Life will be held at Holy Faith Catholic Church on Friday, November 27, 2026, at 11:30am.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Bread of the Mighty - Feeding Northeast Florida.
